Rust: The Silent Lock Killer
Rust doesn’t just look bad — it weakens the entire lock body and key mechanism. Over time, rust can make your deadbolt seize or the latch fail to retract. Salt from winter sidewalks also accelerates this corrosion, especially on storefront and garage doors near the street.
What to do:
Once or twice a year, clean exterior locks with mild soap and water, then dry them completely.
Apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant for protection.
Consider upgrading to stainless steel, brass, or coated hardware — they resist corrosion much better than cheaper alloys.
